Learning and development

Your service year will be challenging. AmeriCorps members who take initiative to receive and implement feedback, have a growth mindset and seek new opportunities can expect to develop the leadership skills that will make them successful. Outlined below are the ways that Â鶹ÊÓƵ will prepare and support you in your work this year and beyond.

The power of teamwork and collaboration

We value dialogue and creating environments where our differences are supported and celebrated. Your experience will be most rewarding when you have a growth mindset to learn about yourself, your students, partner teachers and the world around us. You will serve in a school with a diverse team of young people from different backgrounds. The relationships you develop with your teammates will support you through every success or challenge throughout your service year.

At Â鶹ÊÓƵ Denver, you’ll find an array of supports including:

  • Support and individualized coaching from your school Impact Manager
  • A second-year Service Leader at your school that will share perspective and guidance from their past service experience
  • Networking opportunities through alumni and community and corporate partnerships
  • Annual events including career fairs, panels and networking events with additional trainings lead by partners such as Deloitte, DaVita, Bank of America and Santander
  • Access to scholarships from a large network of university partners
  • one-on-one mentor program where you are matched with a local professional for networking and additional to support you throughout your service year.
  • Serving on a school team will provide you with opportunities to lead your team in school events and other coordinator roles like community outreach.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ provides ongoing training to ensure that you feel confident and prepared in your role to work with students, teammates and school partners.

Training academies

Your first day of service begins with Basic Training Academy, which is a two to three week on-boarding experience. You’ll meet your service team, get prepared and trained for the year ahead and learn about Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s culture, values, and our approach to supporting students. You will also learn about local context in your city.

Halfway through the year, each Â鶹ÊÓƵ site dedicates time to a Mid-Year Summit. This is an opportunity to refocus from your work in school in order to develop advanced skills related to our civic competencies, reflect on what you have learned, set goals for the second half of the year and reconnect with the Â鶹ÊÓƵ community.

Continuous training

You will have learning and development opportunities that will focus on providing you with ongoing training and development. We call these learning and development days, or L&D days for short. While every training is different, you can expect experiences such as literacy and math tutoring training, presentations from guest speakers, networking events, and professional development training including resume writing and public speaking.
